The Lilac Team is working with Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada to rejuvenate The Farm’s lilacs. Of particular interest are the Canadian cultivars. In 1920, while working here in Ottawa at the Central Experimental Farm, Isabella Preston began to develop what are now known as the Preston lilacs (Syringa ×prestoniae) - late-blooming and bred to survive Canada’s cold climate.
The Lilac Team is working to ensure representation of Isabella Preston's cultivars as well as those of Frank L. Skinner, William A. Cumming, and other Canadian breeders.
Work includes pruning, documenting, identifying, labelling and acquiring new stock.
