What makes a good winter hedge in Ottawa? What about summer foliage? How fast does it grow? Will it stop the wind?
Over 90 hedges at The Farm can help answer such questions. They are the survivors of an extensive program of testing by the Department of Agriculture (now Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada). The first hedges were planted in 1889, the last in 1982.
Based on results of the trials, recommendations were made for deciduous or evergreen hedges, as well as advice on planting, trimming, feeding and control of diseases and pests.
These can be found in the AAFC publication Hedges for Canadian Gardens, revised by Trevor J. Cole.
